If you are in Campofelice di Roccella and you loved to be immersed in the nature and in the folklore of the ancient sicilian town, you cannot absolutely miss a trip to discover the Grotta Grattara Park, one of the most misterious land includes in the Madonie Park. The Grotta Grattara is part of the municipality of Gratteri, about 30 minutes from Campofelice di Roccella, and it stands at 1000 meters above sea level.
The Grotta Grattara has always been at the center of stories and legends that are handed down from generation to generation. It is said, for example, that inside it lives the Befana (“A Vecchia Strina”), a figure full of mystery and magic that has always had the task of protecting the cave and that, on the last night of the year, leaves for the homes gratteresi to leave gifts to children. Arrived on the roofs of the houses, invisible and silent, the Befana slips along the chimneys and sneaks in to fill the hanging socks. But the Grattara Cave also boasts a great naturalistic value: the path that leads from the plateau of San Nicola up to the cave, offers wonderful panoramic views of the territory and views of the multiform nature of the Madonie. To accompany travelers, moreover, are the lively sounds of birds that nest here and flocks of sheep grazing, for a truly idyllic setting.
For the more trained, you can continue this journey for a while longer. Just climb up to the extreme slopes of Pizzo di Pilo, at over 1000 meters above sea level, from where you can see a breathtaking panoramic landscape.
